Key Responsibilities

As an apprentice electrician, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Install electrical controls and panel boxes.
  • Repair and replace electrical controls and panel boxes.
  • Install underground wiring and cables.
  • Splice, join and connect electrical wires.
  • Install surface-mount and overhead cables.
  • Test and measure voltage, loads and ground-fault integrity of circuits.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems and isolate faults.
  • Design and construct single-phase electrical services.
  • Design and construct low-voltage, 30 to 750V multiphase services.
  • Install power generation, standby power generation and power-conditioning systems.
  • Connect power to audio and visual equipment.
  • Ground and bond electrical equipment, systems and structures.
  • Renovate electrical systems in residential and commercial buildings.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance programs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, maps, drawings and specifications.
  • Determine suitable materials and methods for hazardous locations.
  • Commission electrical systems and components.
  • Keep maintenance reports and other required documentation.
  • Estimate material requirements and project costs.
  • Provide professional customer service.
  • Supervise other workers when required.

Requirements

The ideal candidate shall have the following:

Education

  • College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 to 2 years.

Experience

  • 2 years to less than 3 years of experience in the field.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to install, repair and maintain electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical controls, panel boxes, wiring and cables.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and isolate electrical faults.
  • Ability to test voltage, electrical loads and circuit integrity.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, maps and specifications.
  • Knowledge of residential and commercial electrical systems.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance and system commissioning.
  • Knowledge of grounding and bonding electrical equipment.
  • Ability to estimate materials and project costs.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
